Australian Workers' Union


an Australian trade union formed in 1891 by shearers and other rural workers; became one of Australia's largest unions with membership drawn from widely varying industries; in 1993 amalgamated with the Federation of Industrial, Manufacturing and Engineering Employees (FIMEE); FIMEE had been formed in 1991 by amalgamation of several unions, including the Federated Ironworkers' Association (first registered 1911).
